The Santa Cruz project

Will be A CHURCH COMPRISED OF CHRISTIANS WHO FIND THEIR PURPOSE IN THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST EXPRESSED THROUGH BIBLICAL WORSHIP, DISCIPLESHIP AND COMMUNITY

We hope to be a church...

that serves our community by participating in existing community projects in the Name of Christ thus BUILDING BRIDGES OF TRUST THAT CAN BEAR THE WEIGHT OF TRUTH.

As we have learned more about the community, there is a unique openness to family ministry at this particular moment in time.  In a tough culture, the Santa Cruz Project will be a church for the whole family where the Gospel informs every aspect of life from marriage, to parenting, to personal finance and recreation.

We believe that God’s mission strategy to the world is the local church.  We believe that God displays the glory of the Gospel as He transforms lives and brings those people into community in His body, the church.  As the church, we find great joy in obeying the Great Commandment and the Great Commission
(Matthew 22:27-40, 28:19-20).

These purposes of the church guide our mission and vision both locally and globally.
    -  Love the Lord your God (worship)
    -  Love your neighbor (ministry)
    -  Make disciples (evangelism)
    -  Baptizing them (fellowship)

Why Santa Cruz

THE BAY AREA is AMERICA's least churched AREA.

Why Santa Cruz

THE BAY AREA is AMERICA's least churched AREA.

Because we love the people and the area of Santa Cruz!

  • Santa Cruz was "weird" before Austin, Louisville, and Portland
  • There are currently no Southern Baptist Churches in our target area.
  • According to Barna's most recent stats, the Bay Area is number one on the list of "America's Most Churchless Cities."
  • Barna also lists San Francisco as #97 out of 100 on his list of America's "Bible Minded Cities", meaning that only 3 major areas are less Bible minded.
  • Santa Cruz County has 271,804 people and according to the ARDA, only 13,838 (5%) of those people are evangelical Christians.
  • Pastors of existing churches in Santa Cruz have stated, "the city could use 20 more churches planted tomorrow."
  • Santa Cruz is a very pluralistic place with numerous religions represented including Baha'i, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Interfaith, Judaism, Mysticism, and various New Age places of Worship.
  • Home of UC Santa Cruz: 17,866 students and Cabrillo College: 17,741 students.
  • The largest percentage of the population is between the ages of 25-44.
  • There are 93,076 households in Santa Cruz County. 47% of those households are married couples and 62% are family households.  The average household income for Santa Cruz is $96,813.
  • The Bay Area is home to Apple, Electronic Arts, Chevron, Google, Facebook, Dreamworks, Pixar, Ebay, Youtube, Craigslist, Gap, VISA, Twitter, Levi’s, Wells Fargo, Lucasfilm and many other global companies.
  • The Bay Area allows us to be connected and on mission globally—33% of the population are foreign born.
  • Some of the largest inaccessible UPG’s live in the Bay Area: East Asian, South Asian, Central Asian, Middle Eastern all find Santa Cruz home.

Shannon is an amazing Mom to three wonderful children, as well as, a gifted entrepreneur who has started two businesses from scratch. The Cunninghams lived in the Bay Area for eight years and have both felt a burden to plant a Gospel-centered church in Santa Cruz County.

WHAT WE VALUE

The ultimate Core Value of our church is the worship of Christ.    We believe that all of the Old Testament points forward toward Christ and that all of the New Testament points backwards to Christ.  Each of the other core values stem from this and undergird it.

We believe that one of the ways we worship Christ is through being disciples and making disciples.  Teaching others through word and action, life and doctrine, we will lead and walk with others to become dedicated and committed followers of Christ.

We believe that the worship of Christ and discipleship are not values that are done in isolation but in community.  We highly value the local church, which is the visible expression of the Body of Christ here on earth.  We believe that living in community for the glory of God is one of the best ways to represent and share Christ faithfully to our unbelieving friends and family.
